The library structure is situated in the centre of the university premises of CVUT (Czech Technical University) in Prague 6 – Dejvice, near the streets Technická, Studentská, and Thákurova on a site the total area of which is 11,740 m2. The open spaces are graded as a rest, recreational area completed with green vegetation.
The library is designed in a rounded square outline with outside dimensions ca 75 m by 75 m. The structure has 6 above-ground floors (1st ¨to 6th floor) and three basements (1st to 3rd basement) in which parking, a book store and technical background will be located. The 1st and 2nd floors are public areas with complementary functions (cafeteria, lecture theatre, exhibition area, bookshop, night study room) and is a free-communication space for the meeting of university premises visitors. The library operation itself begins from the intermediate floor – 2nd above-ground floor – upwards. Open access to library collections, study rooms, classrooms, and the administrative background of the library are situated on the AG floors.
Year-round operation, 7 days a week, 14 hours a day is presupposed, perspective plan for round-the-clock service with limited range of services /only night-study on the 1st floor/ during night opening. Operation and technologies of the NTK are based on the principles of economic operation, maximum satisfaction of user needs with the use of modern information and communication technologies.
Requirements for the layout and operating solution are based on knowledge of the layout and operating solutions of significant European and world libraries and on operational experience of the State Technical Library.
